Professional Narrative

Gary Miller is an Instructional Technology Specialist. Gary's training sessions focus on best instructional practices using Web 2.0 tools. His teaching career began in 1979 as a Business Education teacher in a rural South Dakota school. His first experience with computers was in 1982, when the school purchased two Commodore Pets. In 1983 he purchased a Commodore 64 for personal use. Since that time, he has spent many hours trying to keep up with technology. His career includes two years in the early 90's as the Technology Coordinator at Little Wound School on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and six years as an Instructional Technology Specialist for the Rapid City Area School district. He was on the Computer Curriculum Committee in 1996, and chaired the committee in 2001. Gary also served on the Research and Development Committee for the Rapid City Area Schools for three years. Over the years, he has presented at the Technology and Innovation in Education (TIE) Conference many times, and is available for training sessions and teacher inservices. In his alter-ego, Gary was a Colonel (retired) in the Army National Guard. During his 40+ years of military service, he flew UH-1 Huey Helicopters, commanded the 1085th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) and served as the Executive Officer for the 196th Regional Training Institute. In addition, he taught Officer Candidates, and was the Senior Instructor for 8 years. He deployed to Basra, Iraq from Feb 2009 to Feb 2010 as an Aviation Operations Officer for the 34th Infantry Division (MNARNG). He deployed to Iraq a second time as a representative for the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) from Mar 11 to Dec 11. Retired 31 Jul 2012.
